Tips for a short break in Germany

I have very limited experience of Germany (passing through a lot of it on a coach and then cycling a short distance to the SPEZI trade show), but I agree it all looks very tidy. I do like a little of the laissez faire aspect of France, which I've visited much more.

I've never been to the Netherlands yet, and find myself wondering, from what I've heard, whether they have a happy medium of 'all works well, yet laid back...'?

I really think it might be time to rectify the Netherlands omission.
