Tire Decisions

Ok so after my disaster of a ride at the week end thinking i may need a couple new tire which is really annoying as these tires have only done about 400-500 miles from new. What do you guys think firstly do they need replacing and secondly if so what would you recommend i currently have schwalbe fitted although cannot remember the model off the top of my head.

I have a pair of Victoria rubino pro tech, folding Road tyres 25 mm, they are rubino pro with extra protection. I don't get on with them so they have probably done about 200 miles. Yours for postage...

Thanks for the really generous offer but thinking of either another set of schwalbe or switching to continental which was the make i used to run on my MTB just not really sure on which model would be best. The worry is I'm doing a sportive on the same route in September and worrying about having another set of tires wrecked as many of the roads had flints all over the place.

I have recently stuck a set in 28 width on my hybrid and am liking them. Would definitely consider them for the roadie too when they are needing replaced.

Standard rubinos got me through a 2 hour un intentional off road ride through abandoned mines in the dales without a scratch to the tyre before getting rescued a few weeks ago they dont giveme the heavy riding on plastic feeling other cheap tyres have they seem very grippy too.

I would continue to ride the tires. my last pair had worse cuts than those.

When I have been in that situation and its a new tyre and want to squeeze a few more miles out of it before you scrap it, and presuming you have an old tyre at hand, cut out a patch from the old tyre and smooth down the edges and vulcanise it to the inside of the tyre with rubber solution from your repair kit and then a couple of bits of duct tape over it to smooth it over. The only downfall with it is, as you ride you can feel a small bump every revolution as you ride. One of my tyres at present on one of my bikes is done this way at present and was driving me nuts yesterday with the rythmic tapping as the wheel turned.

So annoying! !!! Yesterday I was looking for a tube to replace a spare when I came across 3 Michelin Service Course tyres. All 3 have a very small cut on the side wall and they are nearly new condition.... under 500 for the 3 together. They are nice tyres but I cannot afford to retire them so new. I need to repair them properly and use them on the trainer or have a good test ride on them.
I know somebody that fixes small side wall cuts and rides the tyres without a care in the world he says he has done that for years. He said he only meant to squeeze a few more miles out of a tyre years ago and he ended up running the tyre till the end. I think I'll ask to show me how he repairs them.

I did try to fix one tyre and the hardest part was to glue the patch to the tyre. It worked but I retired the tyre after a 20 mile test ride.... I found it too worrying to ride like that

I was tempted to try a repair them but like you said its a piece of mind thing. Have a new training tire on the turbo at the mo so they wouldn't be needed for that either. May look at repairing and keeping them for the sportive in September around the same course (After a good test ride of course). As about 15-20 miles of the course was single track lanes with loads of flints that get washed out from the adjoining fields. My friend who rode it last year said they had 6 punctures on that course the last one blowing the side wall out so am very reluctant to ride new rubber on that route.

AFAIK the schwalbe tyres wouldn't have threads that could rot.

Well have a new pair of schwalbe's so fingers crossed i will have better luck, couldn't leave it to long to decide with the weather being so nice. May not get many more summer days to ride outside. lol. Thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions though.

Ive tried a fair few tyres and I still think the best ( including tubs ) are the conti grand sport race . The funny thing is , conti where giving these away about a year ago and everyone said they where rubbish . I put a post up offering to buy them but never got any of these rubbish free tyres offered .

Further to my earlier post. The curiosity got the better of me so I asked to see a tyre and to show me how to repair it.
I was very impressed. The cut was on a side wall and maybe 5mm long but he said you could see through.

He said he has tried a number of things and perfected the technique over time but Velo rim tape is what he uses now. I'm not sure what the black sticky stuff is, I thought it was the stuff to fix car tyres but he said it wasn't, obviously I don't think he wants to reveal what it is but it's flexy, and black. He is going to let me have a little to fix my 3 tyres

I do intend to take it very easy thought, the plan is to have a dedicated rear wheel for testing so it will be a long test as I wont be riding the tyre all the time.

One thing he said got me thinking.... he said, have you ever been to India? and then he said "there they fix any tyre, they don't waste anything" Probably it's very true but it doesn't necessarily mean that is safe. I'll have to wait and see.
