To be fair, it did change a lot of things, but still, the BBC et al seem to be squeezing every last ounce out of it, and as I say, you'd think it was the only boat in the history of the universe to sink.

It vaguely occurred to me that had the Californian or whatever it was come to the rescue, would they have possibly crashed into the same iceberg in the process, leaving a terrible scene for the crew of the Carpathia??
Also, how could they have rescued everyone in time anyway?

Considering BBC Breakfast did the 'no-one knows their neighbours' story for the third time this year the other day, I'd say they're looking for something to fill the gaps.

I did hear on the radio the other day that a ship had embarked from Southampton carrying relatives of some of the victims, and the liner would follow the exact route of the Titanic... I hope it doesn't quite follow the 'exact' route though.

A couple of things annoy me about it.
Firstly it's not the worst or biggest maritime disaster and there have been plenty of other families around the world mourning the loss of loved ones at sea, some in even more tragic and poignant circumstances.
Secondly what really irks me is that (if it's true) the ship sank because the builders skimped on the steel used for the rivets, which broke too easily when a multi-riveted steel structure should actually be immensely strong with a good ability to absorb partial damage. Similar techniques were invented a couple of centuries ago to build steam boilers and are still used successfully today. On top of the shoddy workmanship is the familiar story of the greed and arrogance of the owners who allowed the ship to be built with insufficient lifeboats and only partial bulkheads.
Deep sea shipping has always been about moving goods or passengers for the minimum cost and Titanic was essentially an emigrant ship built cheaply to make money from the misery of the millions of Scots and Irish poor. The glamour of the first class parts of the ship tends to obscure the squalour of the bits below decks.
There are so many parallels with modern air travel; anybody who has flown around the Middle East will have seen the thousands of Phillipinos, Malaysians, Bangladeshis and others being crammed like sardines in the backs of 747s, well out of sight of the folks up front who waft along on a euphoric wave of cabin service and airline PR.
