Coming home from work last week, I suffered a piece of glass in the tyre. I had just replaced the tube and was starting the pumping when a passing friend stopped and from his boot produced a track pump - excellent. I was amused the next day when I saw him with a puncture and he admitted he packed the wrong tube in his saddle pouch. I was pleased to be able to produce a new tube from the boot of the car.

it's amazing how few riders carry a pump
I had the pump puncture once, oh the laughing I did, an ancient zefal plastic tube pump, I asked three riders and inspected at least a hundred bikes parked at the Uni racks, nada, set off with a very soft tyre thinking I'd spot someone, nada, miles and miles later I cried with delight as a portly touring type with full panniers hove into view
