Cycling up to a spectacular mountain pass, the higher and tougher the climb, the happier I feel riding up it. The mountains are a perfect escape from modern life: filled with wildlife, quiet and very scenic. Sometimes I wish I could live in the house in the middle of the photo below (taken during my trip to the Italian Alps in 2017).

Gloucester winning a game of rugby. Alas, doesn't happen often.

Fishing. Alas doesn't happen often.

Cycling. Alas...

Reading a good book - alas, I'm on a run of godawful books at the moment.

Playing the guitar. Listening to music. Does happen very often :-)

Watching young Bertie grow up.

Dogs.

The list could get very long. But despite all these joyful things I remain a grumpy old git.

Strangely I like cycling on quiet roads or paths in new places. Better on my trike where possible and taking a few nice( to me anyway) photos. I also enjoy just getting out and going somewhere as I suffer from cabin fever very easily. I cannot walk far so cycling or sadly car is my main transport. I am told I have a grumpy face but that is only a front.

I find all these threads where the old blokes here try to outgrump each other rather tedious.
So what brings you real joy?

I find pantos so so, but the look on kids faces as they scream at the actors brings me joy
I like Gavin and Stacey. It doesn't bring me joy, but the whole family trying to do Nessa impressions the next day definitely brings me joy

And this sunset last night too..... View attachment 498286

Too many moaning old grumps threads ATM. It's time for joy

Sometimes joy is hard to find, in all these temporary, ups and downs.

But I always remind myself if I'm having a 'grumpy' day to 'Get on with it girl - after all you're a long time dead'.

And I've been lucky enough to be able to. create myself a pretty nice life.

I just get down when encountering bigotry, wilful ignorance, bullying, violence, environmental destruction.. All that shoot.

Plus its often that I'm just tired, or hungry, so I need a cup of tea and a biscuit

But in terms of Joy?? I guess It's all the usual clichéd stuff.

Climbing to the top of hills - on foot or by bike - to gaze at the view.
Camping out in the wilds.

Travelling to new places, and meeting new people.

Campfires, birdsong, clear mountain streams.. All that shizzle.

Sunny days, a good crop of carrots, doing a decent day's work on the farm.
A decent cheese, a nice bottle of wine, or a beer.

Helping a student physically achieve something, they thought they never would.

Hanging out with my family and friends, but also enjoying solitude.
(I like my own company - I'm an alright person to hang out with )

Today I'm deriving a sort of Joy from putting together a conference presentation on "Automation, and Robotics in Agroecology" - my specialist subject (not really )

Thankfully I'm only chairing the session, I have selected panel members with proper expertise. :becool:

But I am also learning stuff along the way, and that's another source of joy.

Learning new things, and new angles on old things

Being alive, is the only way to experience joy, just don't get too attached to its experience, elsewise you'll be miserable when that 'peak' experience inevitably dissipates.. Some days are just a bit more "meh" than others, that's how life is..

Maybe these unrealistic expectations that things should always be, how we want them to be, are a major source of 'The Grumps'??

Here we are, a nice picture of me flying a kite backwards.. Who could fail to be cheered up by that ??

I didn't see the G&S Xmas special, but I did see some of the series, and really enjoyed the 'playing it straight' humour
