I, entirely due to my own idiocy, put myself in a forced pothole jumping situation today.

While the bike herself performed admirably, the skirtguard did not rise to the occasion. It popped off the mudguard and entangled itself under the chainguard around the rear axle. In untangling it I managed to pull off the sprocket circlip, thus rendering the bike unrideable and forcing a pre-work trip to the LBS round the corner.

One thing that cheered me up was finding out that at 8.30am there was a queue of commuters picking up, dropping off and popping in. London really is becoming a cycling city!

Sprocket circlip? I've no idea what that might be.

Anyhow I was wandering about/working on my bike early this evening and I found myself on an on-road cycle route in Greenwich (Roan Street). Because it's barred to motors, it's only used by bikes and today there was a steady flow of cyclists - mostly experienced commuters. Lovely to see.

And so quiet....so quiet that a parakeet flew past at eye-level and, oops, I did a u-turn while looking for an address and only became aware that there was a bike just behind me when I heard their freewheel.... And the reason I heard the freewheel was because I had just stupidly forced them into evasive action. My apologies to that cyclist. Still, let's be positive, I was the most dangerous thing on that road!

Yes - not to be recommended as I found after I put SPDs on my Pashley. I decided that now I could pull up on the pedals this would allow me to jump over the ruts in the road!

My feet were agony for weeks after that. The doctor thought I had gout but I think it's more likely I had pulled my toes out of their sockets.

I had a similar incident down hills road in Cambridge a couple of weeks ago, had to hop over a small pothole to avoid a pedestrian who had decided to walk out between 2 parked cars, thought nothing of it at the time but must have weakened something. parked the bike up about half a mile away and when I came back to it I found the rear hanger dangling on the chain, had completely sheared off.

locked it as securely as I could at the train station as I did not have enough money to fix it at station cycles there and then, came back a couple of days later to collect it in the car and its vanished
