I just ignore them, you seem to get a load then, nothing, I believe if ignored your number gets logged as a dud number, then you don't get bothered for a while

I've had one outfit ringing me for ... must be over 2 years. Using multiple numbers (I always block new ones) and leaving messages. I've never answered.

No sign of them getting the hint.

Phone them back, number withheld, and pretend to be a Microsoft agent, or a car seller or anything really. Most of the time the number doesn't even exist as it seems to be generated for a one time use.

I only ever answered one unknown number and they asked if I'd had an accident recently. I said yes (I hadn't) and she went in to overdrive then and said how do I feel now. I replied once the funeral started it was fine. She hung up.

I had similar, who got really excited that I would give the details of the person who had caused the accident and all my injuries, which I was quite happy to list. Given at the time I was on a high dose of tramadol I probably wasn't thinking straight.

The lady took my details, then the details of the person who caused it and paused for a bit. She then said "but they're the same".

My reply; "yes, I'm the idiot who caused the crash".

End of call ...

I pretended to be interested, gave them Accy's name and address, and went through 101 questions and made an appointment for their surveyor to visit.

As the conversation drew to a close I said, "oh, just one final thing - how do they get the old stuff out?"

Worth noting that not all telephone providers "honour" the withholding of called number. I always hide my caller ID number yet have had companies say I'll call you back on <my number>" despite it being withheld. I've only found this occasionally when calling landline from my mobile to some landline providers eg BT honour the withholding but a few years ago calling a specific non-BT provided landline they didn't - not going to name the provider as they may have changed system and/or you never know what company provides telephone service to whoever you are calling.

Try putting #31# in front/at the start of the the number you're calling.

My understanding is it's not down to the calling device but down to the called provider honouring the "presentation withheld" flag associated with the call. Don't know if many still use it but calling a landline provided through ISDN PRI often doesn't honour the "presentation withheld" flag.

I've used it on any mobile when I've wanted to hide the number I'm calling from.
It's nothing new, using it since 1999.

The challenge is knowing if the system receiving the call is being revealing your number. It’s rare that I call a company where the discussion raises my own number. Most calls to landlines I have no idea if their service provider is honouring the withhold flag. It only happens when they say they'll call me back and I go to give them my number and they say "it's ok, it's 01234 567890". Most calls there is no way of knowing.

Makes little difference how the caller puts the flag on the call, it's the receiving system that is the issue.
