Im thinking of putting some toe clips on the flat pedals on my road bike. I'm not ready for clipless yet. Should I get them with the straps too? I will be mainly riding on roads and I worry about getting my feet out in time for traffic lights etc.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I have a cheap pair from Amazon. Solid top that you just slip the front of your feet into. No straps and your feet won't get stuck.

You need the right kind of pedals for toe-clips, with a tab so you can flip them to get your foot in. Straps make them much more useful—you can adjust them to hold your foot without making it difficult to stop.

Metal ones are much better than plastic.

To be honest, i tend to be a pootler and have only used mine a couple of times, and mainly in dry weather so i'm not the best person to ask. I usually just wear my trainers and not bother using anything else.

I have decided to keep the clips and straps on my emergency winter biker anther than swap the Time pedals again, IF I go out tonight. Pull them good and tight and look for something solid to hold on to if I stop! It has been many years!

When riding in traffic, do not do traditional toe straps up so tight that you can't get your feet out.

If you do want tight, people say nice things about Power Grips, which also have the benefit of letting you see if you get on with the whole twisting-foot release idea before you try clipping in.

Personally, I gave up with the whole shebang. It ain't worth it. Rubber grips on the pedals are sufficient.

If you're going to use toe cages (as I did for many years - only went clipless a short while ago), definitely go with the straps as well - I tried once without straps and found my feet sliding out the sides of the cage on a regular basis. Plus, ironically, I found it harder to get my feet back in when on the move, as the cage tended to close up back on to itself whereas with straps, it held the cage open.

I'll admit I never tightened my straps up all that much - never had any problem freeing up my feet when stopping, just pulled it out. The cage was really only there to help me keep my foot in the correct position on the pedal itself.
