One of my favourite ones was the cycle-chat. Big, fat, juicy, rounded, showed fnaar-like promise but proved too cliquey for me.

(Not even a flouncette but I can't find an appropriate smiley any more.)

Sorry Shaun, that wasn't justified. I've just had a horrible few hours.

But I wouldn't mind the "horrified" smiley back again.

You alright Mort?

When I was a boy (TM Marco Pierre White) I used to work on a tomato farm and the gorgeous smell of those vines will stay with me for ever.

I only buy vined tomatos for that very reason and can often be found in Tescos with my head in the tomato basket, re-living my youth.

I too worked with a horticultural establishment that grew tomatoes.

Unlike you, I didn't find the smell of tomato vines particularly attractive nor did I enjoy the challenge of getting ride of the green crust that would develop on every part of the body that came into contact with the tomato vines. A two acre greenhouse could be a torturous place to work in high summer even with the all of the vents open.

The tomatoes however were fine. I rarely took more than bread and butter and hard boiled eggs to work as there were sufficient salad vegetables to make fine sandwiches.

I nearly met my death in a tomato greenhouse on two, possibly three, separate occasions. But the stories are best told in a separate thread.

The finest tomatoes that I have had the pleasure of eating have been served as part of a Greek salad in any of the restaurants on any of the Greek islands that I have holidayed on.

Vern - there's discretion and then there's just plain coy. I think I speak for the assembled multitudes when I say that we await your tale of the killer tomatoes with bated breath

Whatever happened to nice sweet tomatoes you used to be able to get from the Canary Islands in the winter?
