You've got the wrong Tommy Godwin. The one in this thread died in 1975.
The other Tommy Godwin who's equally famous HERE is still alive and lives in Soihull and is president of the Solihull Cycling Club.

You may also be impressed with earlier record holder Walter Greaves who had been aiming to beat 50,000 miles but got knocked off his bike by a car and developed an abscess which led to two weeks in hospital. He eventually managed 'only' 45,383 miles and his record didn't last long because another rider was already on his way to beating it - "just for fun"!
Oh, silly me - I forgot to mention that Walter Greaves only had one arm!

How did they verify the distances? Surely they didn't have officials watching them for 10-12 hours a day for a year?
Godwin had a team of pacers; it's not clear whether he drafted them but if he did, I think it goes against the spirit of such a record, though it was still a pretty amazing feat.

I did 200 miles one day a few years ago, just to see if I could. Leeds, Hawes, Leyburn, Northallerton, York, Goole, Castleford, Leeds. I didn't feel like doing anything the next day - nor the day after, come to that.
