"Cooked" would be over selling tonight's salad, which was more assembled from parts at best..

- Corned beef (posh co-op, reduced, 30% retail)
- Cheddar (Davidstow / Waitrose, promo, 75% retail)
- Pickles (Kuhne, promo, 80% retail)
- Cherry tomatoes (Posh co-op, reduced, 50% retail)
- Pickled onions (povvo Waitrose, full price - boo!)
- Coleslaw (Waitrose, reduced, 60% retail)
- Salad (Co-op, reduced, 25% retail)

While not the yellow sticker thread it's really rewarding to have a delicious, really nice quality meal for a fair bit less than it should have cost (I reckon less than two and a half quid  ).

Dessert will likely be the usual strawberries / blueberries / pistachios and greek yoghurt; again all of which being either yellow-stickered clearance or bought on promo :becool:

I do wonder how much fuel you burn by visiting all those stores to save coppers on food.
That's not a sarci/flippant comment BTW.

Funnily enough I had a stab at calculating fuel cost per mile for the bike in this post (which appears to have killed the thread  ).

It came out at about 15p per mile, while an out-and-back ride to the supermarket is maybe 12 miles so about £1.80 which is typically less than I'd save on a perhaps typical £15-20 shop.. Plus the stuff that comes from the co-op is literally a sub-minute walk from work so this doesn't really factor in.

Of course while the incentive to get out is usually utility the ride is usually reward in itself and the costing exercise doesn't take into account the mental and physical benefits that come with piling on the miles.. and if I wasn't riding to the shops I'd be riding somewhere else.

In the summer I might average 120-140 miles per week; if I pared this back to the bare minimum it would be less than half this... but why would I want to?

Finally you suggest that the saving is "coppers", however I reckon I save maybe 20% across the board by hunting reductions and promos, which over a year is many hundreds of pounds and to me certainly a significant amount of money.

Yes, I meant coppers compared to time/effort/ money I wrongly assumed you spent obtaining said foods.
As you say, going by bike puts a different complexion on it.
BTW, I do enjoy reading about people YS sucesses.

Tonight I am on home made GIANT beef burger, chips, peas and gravy.
Burgers are part through cooking in the air fryer so will put the chips in now.

Well, granted it's not peanuts (I was surprised by the cost per mile tbh, however food's not cheap and I'll only buy decent quality).

Even were the costs comparable I'd never consider getting in the car to visit the supermarket and yes; going on the bike's usually a nice little mission (at least when the weather's nice) rather than the exercise in monotony and frustration that usually typifies going in the car.

Are you a yellow sticker hound or just living vicariously through the scores of others?

Tonight's just-finished delight consisted of:

- Battered cod (Posh Waitrose which IMO isn't far off chip shop quality, 40% of retail, hope I don't get scromboid poisoning)
- Broccoli (Co-op, 50% of retail)
- Home made Tartare sauce (various, maybe 30% of the ingredients bought on modest promo as they're mostly things that don't go off)

I'm especially happy with the sauce since the Waitrose stuff tastes like it's made of salad cream and the stuff I've made (taking no credit, from a BBC good food recipe) is sublime and comparable to that you'd get in a restaurant IMO).

Cost probably about a £4-5 when all's said and done and absolutely delicious

I tend you just shop at Aldi as Tesco and Asda are a pain to get to and Aldi are not big on YS.
Also, I would only buy YS if it was something I wanted.

And food tastes so much better when you've got it at a bargain.

Or for free. Peak foraging season just about starting here. There's plenty of stuff to pick in the hedgerows, and the village has a community orchard.

Mind, when I was in Aldi a little while back, they were giving away free onions as someone had bloopered on the order and they had far more than they could shift. So I availed myself of a couple of kilos. Besides, I *adore* onion bhajis! :hungry:
