I am baking a cake. My first once since I was an undergraduate and my first ever chocolate cake. Some of the girls that I do intervention science teaching for asked for a cake instead of pie to celebrate/commiserate with after getting their mock GCSE exam grades tonight.

How could I refuse?

Wish me luck.

I used to do a good chocolate cake using evaporated milk. The recipe was in my mums Bero book, must dig it out and give it a go again:hungry:

I used to have a Bero cook book when I baked as an undergraduate. It predated thermostatically controlled ovens and was given to me my a friend's mother. It used terms like place on the middle shelf of a moderate oven.

I thought something was badly wrong.

We've got the 1960's Bero Book [first made the raspberry buns from that when I was 8 or so], + a Jimmy Young cookbook and an old Tricity Oven recipe book that my mum had.

It's a bit wonky and its creation was not without problems. Using cooking chocolate for the icing mixture was a disaster - it separated into curds and oil and I had to go out and buy more double cream and plain chocolate. I also had to buy new tins because the one's that my wife said that we had from my daughter's cake making activities were too small. It's a tad wonky but final judgement will be given by my gannets at school later today.
