The scanner on an EasyJet flight picked up a suspicious metallic object in my small backpack. It was a router collet with a £35 Trend cutter attached. Lord knows what it was doing there. My mistake was to tell them that it was a "cutter". They let me keep the collet. It would actually be pretty hard to do any serious damage to anybody with a router cutter without the tool that rotates it.

I supose you could have thrown it at the window at 30,000 feet, or the pilot....you do have a shifty look about you...

To save weight, I once tried to get all my tools in hand luggage on a flight from Istanbul to Dushanbe (thought I'd be OK because there were no liquids ). The results was a very Midnight Express moment when my bag went through the scanner. Once they understood I was just an idiot cyclist they stopped shouting and put the guns away and were quite nice about it. They stuck the bag in the hold for me and I got it back at the other end. Wouldn't recommend it though.

It's not a big no.

Two years ago I was taking a domestic flight from Glasgow to London and remembered after check-in that I still had my penknife (two bladed) in my pocket. It has sentimental value so I quickly bought an envelope and stamp and posted it to myself. As I went through security, I noticed that knives, scissors etc, with a max blade length of 6cm were permitted in my cabin luggage. I asked the security staff about this and they confirmed that my knife, even with two blades of the pointy kind would have been fine.

A few months ago I flew Glasgow - Amsterdam and tested this out with success. Nobody bothered about it and it went in the tray with all my coins and pocket change.

So I would say to the OP, if you want to take your knife on board, check the restrictions at your departure airport and make sure they are the same for the airport you'll be returning from or passing through.

"Just follow the rules and you won't go wrong - it's easy..."

The DFT publish a list of prohibited items, and also the following text on their website:

There are restrictions on what items you can take onto aircraft for reasons of safety, security and taxes. Some items are not allowed in your hand luggage and some are not allowed anywhere on the aircraft. Some items need to have the approval of the airline before you can take them on board.

Individual airports have discretion to confiscate anything they consider dangerous, regardless of whether or not it appears on the list of prohibited articles and passengers who have queries over whether something will be permitted should check with the airport and airline in question before travelling.

If an individual security operative considers anything you have as being dangerous, you will lose it. It's this lottery that causes the most distress.

[QUOTE 4607345, member: 45"]A friend of mine was prevented from taking a box of Christmas crackers on board.

I think there is actually a specific reference to christmas crackers in most airline's regs.

By the by I know someone who had one of these confiscated.

There is a corkscrew in it but totally enclosed. You would have to do some serious work with the thing to expose the corkscrew and even then it wouldn't be much of a weapon.

Are there any rules for your rights to reclaim anything confiscated?

what happens to all the stuff?

Some of it must be quite valuable.

When I worked for a local authority thay used to have a sale of confiscated airport stuff. I got a very nice swiss army penknife. The proceeds go to charity.
