I'd be very surprised if they were even assembled in the UK. More likely the frames are made in the Far East and assembled there as the components would be cheaper to purchase there. I'd still consider them a manufacturer though, just like Dyson is a maker of vacuum cleaners, even though their factory is in China.

To me they are a manufacturer of bikes, a company that develops and makes them. If the semantics are incorrect, so be it

You are correct afaik that they would be considered as the manufacturer, your warranty is with them. However the degree to which they are actually involved in the production of the product could well be minimal to none. TBH, it doesn't matter either way, as long as it is done right!

I wouldn't call a £1600 specialized bike "top end", Specialized "top end" bikes are the ones over £4000, usually S-Works written on them.

Note, cheap/expensive are relative terms depending on your own financial situation.

I'm happy to be a mug. My Roubaix has the best frame I've ever experienced.
Me too. My Roubaix is also extremely for longer distance rides.
Specialized do tend to put lower end components on low to mid priced Roubaix's. I love the comfort of the SL4 but you can get a better specced bike for the same money.
