There was not a huge gap between BB and most of the men. She was a decent time trialist by men's standards, but certainly didn't beat those at the top, apart from the instance where she held the 12 record. It must be remembered that in those times the top amateur men rarely if ever rode time trials, they concentrated on road racing.

Fergie was no more than a journeyman player in a poor league. You cannot class a manager as a sportsman any more than a chairman who transformed a club with his cash. And that Nosegay fella isn't in either, walking up long hills is not a competitive sport.

Well I have to admire your brass neck after nominating 2 racing drivers and a snooker player. With those you might just as well have left Lance Armstrong in FWIW. And are you sure you meant Bobby Moore and not some golfer? He seems a bit out of place in your selection.

I'm interested by people voting for Roger Bannister - yes, he set a very notable record, but I don't think that otherwise he was noteably dominant in his sport at the time, was he? Would most of us have heard of him if he hadn't been the first to run a sub-4 minute mile?

Regardless of your age or sporting preference and whether you saw Bradman or have any knowledge of him or not, he is so far ahead of his next rival in purely performance stats, that this is a no-brainer. He literally has no rival in any other sport as no one can come close to his awe-inspiring dominance that has never been threatened by anyone else in any other field or activity.

Well my choices were all exemplary sportsmen who if they weren't taking part in their chosen field were always in training.

Dunno about Mark Spitz though, but he was a flippin' good swimmer.
