Top Gear - Clarkson - Cycling

I thought the whole cycling section was bloody great. And the punchline was the best bit - pointing out, that cyclists free up roadspace 'for normal people'. And pointing out that cyclists require six feet of space when being overtaken. It was funny, imsightful and subtle. Too subtle for some CCers i fear.

Well I found the article very funny.
Humour is a personal thing and if you don't like Clarkson then obviously you're not going to enjoy it.
There are others who take themselves too seriously and object to any form of ridicule.
I must admit though, that the Top Gear format is getting rather stale now.

The final "promo" video was spot on. Give the cyclist some space, because they take up less space on a bike, than they would in a car, so we can have more err space for our cars!

i thought it was really funny, especially when they blew up the cyclist for the learn the difference between red and green film. hilarious. And i think Chris Boardman and co were right to take part. it's the best way to show its just for entertainment. not to be taken seriously. loved the dig at Lance too.

I must have missed the subtlety because I didn't think a pile of vegetables and bent bike was at all a subtle way to portray an accident. In fact I thought it was pretty offensive. The rest of it was typical TG.

Like I said last night top gear has a large audience god knows why. It's not my cup of tea these days, watching men past middle age arsing about like teenagers in expensive cars isn't what I call "entertainment". Cycling rarely hits the mainstream and when it does like in top gear I would like to think the BBC would push for it to be at least a little informative. I do wonder sometimes why we are still forced to fund the BBC.

I just thought it was silly. And a missed opportunity, I'm sure those who work at Top Gear are skilled enough to get the laughs and also get some serious points across, but they chose not to, which is a shame.

I thought it worked well......like all TV shows it's about the ratings. The driver who thinks it was serious (i.e. totally misunderstood) is a lost cause anyway, and a minority in terms of the idiots we as cyclists normally encounter. The ones that realise it was a tongue in cheek piece with an underlying serious message are the ones that it might just work on. Let's not forget that this program is aimed at drivers and not cyclists. Warranting air time at all shows that the message about cyclist safety is starting to get across.

I don't watch Top Gear much any more but I did enjoy last night's episode. The cycling feature was funny. I do hope that mentioning the bus issue on the BBC raises questions in the bus companies board rooms.

Having almost been run over by 2 cyclists recently when crossing the road at a crossing on the green man I also hope the "red means stop" message gets through too. That message needs to reach many car and van drivers around here too though.
