Top Rack Bags

Hey all,

I'm looking for a decent sized rack back, but don't know what to look for.
I've just looked through Wiggle and CRC, and can't find anything that's waterproof and sizeable (just so I can shove overnight clothes in).

Any suggestions?

Looking for something as good as my Ortleib pannier bags, or isn't there anything?
Don't particularly want anything Topeak, as seems you have to use their rack system, instead of my current pannier rack. But I'm out of my depth, so hoping for suggestions.

Thank you,

Halfords have got the cBoardman range which seem pretty robust and waterproof (though I think they've got the direction of the zip wrong on one side). Just saying - NB I have felt but not purchased.

I went the other way recently and went for a pair of panniers from Lidl for £9.99!

I will be happy if I can get a couple of years of use from them, as long as they don't eventually suffer a catastrophic failure (e.g. suddenly ripping open).

mm - those panniers look rather wonky to me Colin to be honest - and I don't have much faith in the fixings. hate to say it but probably wasted money, no matter how cheap. I use a pair of small Alturas with R&K fittings - had them for donkeys so in the long term cheap - sometimes they carry 2 D locks.

Good move to go with panniers though - can be simpler.

(My last rack top bag was nice-ish but attached by Velcro - a fag to put on - it did last for years but then it fell off in front of a bus - mobile wrecked, door-key bent so I couldn't get in - luckily garage key not damaged and managed to get to tool kit to bend it back without breaking and get in the house  - that was an expensive bag - could have been more expensive.

PlymSym - can you be a bit more detailed about what you are looking for? ie: why overnight clothes? - anythng else you need to take? - are we talking weekends away?

Hey guys,

I've got my Ortlieb panniers already, which carry a "waterproof" coat, and my D-lock, plus day stuff, but was thinking a rack bag more to carry overnight clothes to cycle from Plym to Tiverton overnight. Just one night, not multiple (for now), but it'd mostly be wash gear, the D-lock, wallet, phone etc, and more importantly overnight clothing to ride back in the following day. The top never gets used, so figured it'd be good to have a top bag, but the Topeaks don't seem to be waterproof like my Ortliebs.

As for the top bag @Blue Hills, how much would you be looking for it? I'm guessing it's an Ortlieb as per the link?

Sorry to hear about the last rack bag though, what a major annoyance! Buggared phone, keys and everything else! Glad the garage key survived though.

Yes it is Ortlieb Plym - same product though as I say always possible that they have tinkered with it - is it the sort of thing you are after? It may be a tad overkill - will hold rather more than a spare day's riding togs - it's really I think for normal/posh clothes.

If you are interested I will dig it out/assess it.

Most definitely interested.
I'm not quite as slim as I'd like to be, so would be perfect for throwing a pair of jeans and a top in and riding with the D-lock in too. Meaning all weight is central and can speed along without a care in the world

It's something I've wanted for a while, but struggle finding a decent waterproof one.

Thank you,

OK, will dig it out of the loft, check it over and then try to PM you in the next few days.

(though just noticed - stupid me - your name! - you are in Plymouth - hate posting stuff - anyway, leave it with me)

Where abouts are you?
I'm heading to the Midlands in a few weeks (well Lincolnshire), and have family in Leicestershire, so could always get them to collect and post, just means I'll use the panniers till I get it.
