But prize money aside who really remembers the team?

Seems a bit unfair.

Would seem like more of an achievement to win (not saying it is at all easy under current format) if everyone raced as individuals.

Strange event anyway - all chugging along forever and a day, occasional breakaway and then sprint finish. Nearly as dull as cricket which is nearly as dull as baseball.

Well, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Ditto baseball and cricket.

Initially the Tour de France was an individual event, and team riding was not allowed. Henri Desgrange, the originator of the event, was opposed to teamwork (and to gears too, incidentally) but he couldn't hold back the tide. He originated the term "domestique" (servant) as an insult to riders who worked for others. A bit of history here.
