For that event specifically I’d say a road bike would be best, however for keeping the bike and using in future have a think about what more you might do with it. If more road-specific riding then a road bike for the road and your MTB for the trails, but I found that a gravel bike gave me the option to link roads with bridlepaths and other trails to open up a whole new world of rides around me.

As well as a gravel bike I also have a road bike and several MTBs; all get used at some point (the road bike is currently on the turbo though).

The Anglesey ride is very lumpy, either up or down. Enjoy. Road or gravel is fine. But remember most gravel bikes are 1x so can be a little compromised on road due to gear jumps. I have a 2x10 Cyclo Cross bike that I use road and off but have two sets of wheels. It has smaller gear gaps so fine on road. Not quite as fast as my road bikes.

Hi everyone,

I have signed up for the Tour de Mon around Aglesey for this August 2025 (106 miles). I have done a lot of mountain biking in the past and am now trying some road, but I am struggling with what type of bike to get. I am currently training on my mountain bike.

The obvious answer would be a Road bike but I am torn between a gravel bike (where I can change the tyres for road tyres) or a full on road bike ( but undertsna dfor this distace it may be unconforable due to geometry. I like the versatility of the gravel bike. However, I understand the gear ratios are different, and whether this would be an ok choice for Tour de Mon. Does anyone have any advice on which I should buy?

Thanks in advance

Road bikes come in a wide range of comfort orientated bikes (there's much more to it but a taller head tube might be a sign) to a full on built for speed but less comfortable racing road bike. A gravel bike with road tyres will be heavier and lowered gear but it will be able to do it too (just less efficiently) its your choice. Talk to a shop and try a few.
