Ferry tickets - Hull to Rotterdam and return - £280

I find it better to buy single ferry tickets, then you are not committed to return on a set day which can put a bit of pressure on you. One man and a bike can usually get on the first available ferry, no pre-booking required, and no more expensive than advance purchase. Also, consider the Newcastle-Ijmuiden route, the Harwich-Hoek of Holland route or Harwich-Esbjerg. It is good to go one way and return another, variety is the spice of life.

This was some years ago. I had been issued an E111 which was marked as valid for ever. I presented it in Berlin and they refused to accept an E111 which is more than 1 year old.
I was only trying to get some dental work done and not emergency treatment as such so I was not left in trouble. However the interview did not even get that far.

For panniers I would recommend Ortlieb, the lighter weight ones as opposed to the bomb proof heavier ones.

I found that by wearing swimming trunks next to the skin and washing them with shampoo every night in the shower that there is no need to take more cycling shorts as you are wearing clean material next to you skin every day. Just remember to get seamless trunks as seams can rub apparently.

Thanks for the tips and advice folks, keep it coming.

I have a valid NHS card that I've been taking with me on trips to Germany for the last 5 years.

I will add the Ortliebs to the list Andy.

Schlitz is on the route BOAB, I'll stop there if it fits into the pattern on the ride.

I've been mulling over the possibility of doing this for charity. I did the Great North run a few years ago for Motor Neurone (Mrs CP's mum died of this), and am thinking of doing it for the agencies that support terminally ill people - Macmillan or Marie Curie. My mum died of cancer 3 years ago and was supported, so I'd like to give something back. ALso, a good friend is very ill with cancer, so it seems like the right choice.

What's anyone's thoughts?

I wouldn't ever consider doing a holiday for charity. It's not as if you're swimming the Atlantic blindfold. Each to his own, though.

It is with a heavy heart that I shovel up the embers of the idea that was 'Tour Von Deutschland' and put them on the back burner.

The CP household is not too flush at the mo', so me swanning off to Germany for 6 weeks has been......ahem....sniff.......postponed.

What has become a reality is...............Drum Roll.....................

'Tour Von North Yorkshire'

Late May Bank Holiday.

I am already packing, and looking on fleabay for some panniers.

PS, a lovely book loaned to me by TheDoctor about the Rhine RadWeg is up for grabs/loan. Names in a hat as always, winner will be notified by PM.
