The Top Gear team toured Vietnam on mopeds and said that the coastal road up to Hue over Hai Van Pass is one of the best coastal roads in the world. A 6 km long tunnel under the pass was opened in 2005 so you will have that mountain pass to yourself.
The Top Gear video (see Youtube) from that pass featured some mouth-watering spectacular scenery. Don't miss out on it........... and remember to take plenty of photos + post them here.

Hey
as the name may indicate I too am planning a world tour, which will include Vietnam. My initial idea for a trip to cycle through europe literally round the world. But with Afganistan being the major crossing point that really didn't appeal as much!

Now I'm just doing the generic tour around the world and then cycling where I can. In Vietnam I thought of cycling through Thailand-Cambodia-Vietnam. But as I will have done 4 months travelling before hand I didn't think it a good idea to try and organise 3-4 weeks cycling in vietnam on my own and booking all the individual places. I also assumed it wouldn't be very safe on my own with the language barrier and obviously being an affluent foreginer...(which lets me honest would make me a targer over here in the UK to the less moral nevermind in Vietnam). So what I did was look into an organise trip, yes expensive (but a lot cheaper than others, 3 weeks in vietnam is about £1700 all inclusive travel, accom, food. 1 week in Japan was about £3500!!)

My only worries are about where to get my kit (including bike) I'd assume these are rentable (I've not read the links yet but I will be doing), secondly and more crucially where to put my big travelling bag! I'm going to travel as light as possible anyway but it's a bit of a worry what I'd do with it without support. Also if I need assistance...what the hell do I do

If anyone can offer advice on how to organise a bike trip midway through traveling (I'll be going on to OZ, NZ and Fiji before organising a cycle trip across USA, which I'll post in my own thread) it would be greatly appreciated. In america I can just post stuff back as it's my final port of call. But especially with Vietnam it's a bit of a concern. Would anyone suggest these paid cycle tours (I think it's called spice roads I've been looking at) or are they as I'd suspect a total waste of money?
