Well done @Paw Broon. It's always good to read these kinds of tales.
I've used a friend's farm to practise & perfect some winter camping. I'll take a roundabout route to get there so it's like a day's touring - with a safety net in case of disaster. I've done the same with campsites, taking a roundabout, easy day but still having a new place to stay.
Another option is WarmShowers - a kind of couch surfing for touring cyclists. I've hosted, never stayed thus far, but have made contact with members for local knowledge. They may be able to help you with the best routes in your chosen areas.
