Toying with a fixed

It's a 54cm, offered here for free by @colly and I picked it up with the intention of passing it on further for the same amount.

It's had a front brake, new Wilier SPD pedals plus two new Schwalbe Lugano tyres that aren't in the photo and have now done a mile. The next plan was to stick a couple of Profile Design aero brake levers on the bar ends and see how that worked with two brakes. Colly mentioned rust around several points on the chrome and I've spent an hour or so looking at that and removing surface rust: there isn't much but the lacquer's aged and it'd crept under that.

The bike's in West Yorkshire, so it may / may not be helpful depending upon where you are.

If the bike stays with me all winter I'll clean off the old lacquer and rust, use the gilding paint I've got to re-chrome the bits needing chroming, then re-lacquer it. But I've not got that far and SWMBO knows it's being passed on anyway.

OAP fixed rider (sometimes) here. I have a few fixed Super Randonnées under my belt and a couple of fixed PBPs. Almost invariably I ride 43x17, though I have an 18 for when I get really tired/old. I've never raced fixed, but I have toured with panniers or saddlebag.
I can't descend as fast as I used to, and longer 1-in-7s might defeat me now, but I still enjoy it just as much as gears.

My last fixie was a tricycle with the pedals directly driving the front wheel so I don't speak from a position of authority.

Is it feasible to ride your current bike around in a single gear until you find the one that suits all your rides. Once this is done could you then use that gear ratio to choose the correct one for a fixie?
