Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted
Pubco's have a lot to answer for, poorly paid, stressed out about-to-go-bankrupt "partners", do not make for a convivial atmosphere. One of my 3 locals was long term very, very popular with a bonus paid manager, he was there 10 years. Since maybe 5 years ago, I've lost cound of the number of "partners" who have come, bright eyed, and left, penniless.
That is like the other local down the road, the opposite of the thriving one I mentioned above. A chain pub, run on a shoestring with poorly paid, poorly trained staff - and it shows in the poor quality of service, poor quality food and often running out of the basics, e.g. beer!!!

Isn't it a bit like the local bus service. You hardly use it as you have a better alternative but miss it when it when it has gone.

Our drinking and social habits have changed a great deal in the last 30 years and rather left the pub behind.

Yes. I detest the fact they let women in the main bars these days. If I want to listen to a woman going on and on and on I could stay at home.

is a translation from pitmatic of what what my late-grandfather and late-uncles used to say.
a mere twelve years ago i was part of my local pub's domino team.... every second week was an 'away' game, and sometimes we couldn't play in the main bar because there were a couple of women in our team

There's a bit of rosy tinting going on here. I too remember cheery pubs of my youth, but there were also just as many miserable dirty little boozers run by grumpy landlords which stank of stale beer, had filthy toilets, were knee deep in fag ends, didn't serve anything more exotic than pork scratchings, were never cleaned from one week to the next - and thoroughly deserved to disappear.

About 50% of the pubs in Hebden Bridge have closed down since I moved here in 1986.

The Shoulder of Mutton only opens part-time hours now. I walked past it at 9 o/c the other evening and there were only 2 people in there, both of them staff!

I play a sad little game when out on my bike - 'spot the recently closed pub'. I have succeeded on the past 4 rides!

Some pubs still buck the trend though ... The local Fox and Goose has just gone into cooperative ownership after the landlady announced her retirement due to ill-health.

Pubs with a special feature such as some of those canal side pubs also seem to be able to buck the widespread trend of demise. There is nothing quite like a summer cycle ride punctuated by an hour or so with a sandwich and a couple of pints whilst admiring beautiful countryside views, as the Rosie & Jim brigade sail past on their narrow boats.

I second that! Pubs now have to have a wider appeal and pubs that have moved with the times have done well. Good food and child friendly are all plus points.

If a pub says 'child friendly' or 'coaches welcome' I move swiftly on:smile:

Oh you wait until that bundle in the picture gets bigger. Child care and a pint all in one, you've not thought this through.

This is popular topic in Private eye or Eyes passim ad nauseum to the cognoscenti ;)

There are still a number of these in existence; you just have to know where to look. Glasgow has a few!
Proper boozers with atmosphere they are; not the posing palaces for people with huge wallets and even huger egos that are somehow taking over these days .

And I have been to some. Down by the docks, where all the furniture was bolted to the floor, the bar had a steel shutter which dropped like a guillotine after last orders and the bar staff were never more than five paces from their pickaxe handles.

Atmosphere is good. Somewhere you can get a decent pint and maybe some snap, with seats, and quiet enough to speak in a normal voice most of the time. But hundreds of those dismal dirty pubs have vanished because no-one - irrespective of wallet or ego - wants to use them. It's not some dreadful conspiracy by pubcos or developers.
