What amazes me about the whole on line ticket business, is why people use the trainline.com, who charge £1 extra, even if you pick up the tickets at the station. I tend to use Southern's web site for most of my train ticket purchases as it's very user friendly, although I'm registered with a few others, as some (like Southern) give extra discounts for journeys within their own region.

Use London Midland for the same reason. As I pass through their stations on a daily basis it's no hassle at all to stop and collect a ticket.

And, on the card as i/d for the pickup point, the card is just to identify your booking. Should work even if it's been replaced later. The ability of booking office staff to help also seems to be a YMMV issue. Just once, the machine failed to print one ticket from a group I was collecting for my daughter - the ticket was Virgin specific and, at the time of booking, only on their website. However the booking clerk at Northampton was able to sort it for me.

Here's another alarming bit of info about discount tickets.

Alarming, for me, because I've done this a number of times. Buying a discounted ticket to (London) Victoria, I've more than once got off one stop early, at Clapham Junction. Usually with bike, meaning I have to go through the staffed barrier, and they've never pulled me up. Maybe I've been lucky, or maybe the ticket I've been buying, not online but on the day at the ticket machine, doesn't have this restriction.

But it would be as well for people to be forewarned, especially if they're planning a train + cycle trip (e.g. train from A to B, cycle from B to C, then return train from C to A).

I did know this rule, although it is daft.
I did buy tickets once by mistake from a stop before the one I was going to get on at, in advance. I realised mistake and tried to get an answer from the operator of the service (most of my current dealings are with CrossCountry, so I think it was them, but may also have been Virgin) whether we'd be allowed to board. I sent an email; which took forever to be answered, and in the meantime my husband phoned the company and spoke to someone in the call centre.

One of the replies was 'no, ticket not valid', the other was 'yes, it'll be fine'. I think we chanced it anyway, the station (at the time) usually didn't have ticket checks and no barriers either.

In reply to the OP, common sense does not get applied to anything on the railway  Some things just defy logic & common sense.

Another tip for people travelling to London, check out prices for tickets to London International rather than your normal London station & it may be a fair bit cheaper  I was told about this by a colleague, these tickets are supposed to be for connecting to Eurostar services, but if you should get questioned, just say you are meeting family/friends & they have your Eurostar tickets

A lot depends upon what type of discounted ticket you've got. In that example it was a Megatrain ticket who offer specific heavily discounted fares across East Midlands trains, South West Trains and Virgin trains, and so do have those restrictions.

When buying a conventional train ticket, the Advance Single/Return tickets state you can't get off earlier, whilst you are allowed to do this with Off Peak or Super Off Peak tickets. More info here.

Another good little tip I use is during the summer holidays, First Capital Connect offered a 25% discount on off peak returns to London. So if I'm cycling somewhere, but need to get a train back home, I buy a return but don't use the outbound ticket, as it still works out cheaper than a single. Southern Railways and other train operators regularly do similar promotions and (if you're only using 1 leg of your return ticket) it's also worth checking the difference in price from buying an A to B return, compared with a B to A return. There can be a big difference, especially between heading in or out of London for the first leg of your journey.

The ticket schemes the companies devise to attract customers back onto the railways means they will eventually drive people away as a consequence of this ridiculous set-up.

I can travel to London with an Apex saver booked 3 months in advance for £7.50 each way but there are only a handful of tickets at this price. By the week before this has risen to £114 for the same journey on the same train at the same time... when it's cheaper to fly! How sustainable is that.

My usual train travel is with Chiltern lines and booked in advance I can do Banbury to London for a fiver. Cheap returns seem to be a bit thin on the ground of late though for some reason. I always get the tickets sent first class post as they do this free of charge.

Yeah, sure. I thought I'd have a peek at the megatrains (=megabus) site and look at their T&C's. Here they are: with acknowledgements to Megabus:

Somewhere, in there, is something about not being able to break your journey, I'd imagine ... so, who can find it first?!

Aha - it's not there!

But it's in their FAQ:-

You must board and alight at the point shown on your reservation, and it is a condition of travel on the train element of megabusplus that you may not board or alight at other points on the route. If you do board/alight at somewhere other than St. Pancras, you will be charged the full single fare for the actual journey made.

It's a crap web site. The small print you showed says to refer to the Timetables section of the web site, which doesn't exist, and when I tried to select a journey it gives an error. Another reason to avoid.

Yes, but remember, we are normal people. That system will have been designed by someone Very Clever in Computers.

I think I and many others would take great offense by this.

I am pretty sure that the person "designing" it, is not "clever in computers" and the "clever computer people" will get shoot all the time about "what if we could do this", "what if we could do that".

Why aren't "very clever in computer" people not normal?

And AFAIK - when I collected a batch of tickets recently I had to select which ones I wanted printing...

Using the car;
fuel £33
tyres £5
total cost of £38

by Train
car journey to and from station, tyres and fuel £6
parking charges (guess) £5
Train Fare £152
Taxis in York (guess) £12
total cost of train £175

Time taken
leave home 1 hour before train
1:50 on train
30 minutes to leave train and take a taxis
total 3hours 20min

By car .... 3 hours

Train is nicer, more comfortable and relaxing (sometimes)
Car allows more baggage, clothing and travel times to suit us.

But at the end of the day the £137 saving makes the car the better option.

Do you really have to take a taxi in york? Do you really have to drive from home? This sounds like where cycling to the station etc would come into the equation.

What about season or week passes fort that £152 a week?

How consistent are your 3hr drives? I know trains aren't perfect (lol) but surely driving swould be more variable. Takes you an hour to get to the station? Traffic?

And a 3 hour+ commute - maybe its time to move house/work.

I don't this is a MegaTrains rule, I think it's in the National Conditions of Carriage somewhere. Perhaps! I do know I've found it before somewhere. I *think* it only applies to advance fares where you're tied into the particular train.

I fully accept that these discount sites are entitled to set the rules and enforce them. After all, you're getting something very cheap - why not accept the terms? All I'd ask, is that they make the conditions very clear to customers at the time of purchase, in large print and not likely to be missed. I fail to see what they stand to gain by entrapping their clients.

As regards terminating a journey early - well there can be many reasons for that. In these days of mobile phones, it is commonplace, for example, to have one's travel plans changed when already on the train: e.g. an event you were travelling to is cancelled. So it must be commonplace, too, to abort your journey and return to the starting point. Maybe the train companies are entitled to levy an additional fare in such circumstances. But a penalty fare? As I understand it, a penalty fare is a punishment for deliberate fare-dodging - say if you board a train without making any attempt to pay the fare. But at the time of boarding the train, assuming it is the correct train to which your discount ticket pertains, you are holding a valid ticket for that train. It's only when you open the door and step out on the platform at the 'wrong' station, that you are no longer in possession of a valid ticket. You ought to have the opportunity to pay any outstanding fare at that time, without incurring a penalty.

Legal eagles please?

And another one. Some years ago I tried to board a train at Farringdon: Thameslink train going South. Barrier wouldn't let me through. I went to the manned barrier, and they wouldn't let me through either: explained that my ticket was marked 'London Terminals' and Farringdon isn't designated as a 'London Terminal'. At least they didn't try to do me for a penalty fare, but even so I thought the excess fare they asked for was a bit steep. So I decided, 'stuff that', and legged it the short walk down the road to Cannon Street, which is listed as a 'London Terminal', and got on a train there (necessitating a change, but I saved some dosh...).

Used a machine yesterday to pick up tickets for daughter. After the bank card /pin stage there was a 'print all journeys' option at the bottom right of the screen (the one showing progress on ptiniting the various coupons). Assume it works if you've booked several journeys and paid in one trnsaction.

Pin stage? I don't have to enter a pin at all - mine is 'collect tickets' -> enter card for 'verification' -> remove card -> enter long 8 digit booking ref -> prints one set of tickets -> start again....

What station/company was the ticket machine?
