What amazes me about the whole on line ticket business, is why people use the trainline.com, who charge £1 extra, even if you pick up the tickets at the station. I tend to use Southern's web site for most of my train ticket purchases as it's very user friendly, although I'm registered with a few others, as some (like Southern) give extra discounts for journeys within their own region.
Use London Midland for the same reason. As I pass through their stations on a daily basis it's no hassle at all to stop and collect a ticket.
And, on the card as i/d for the pickup point, the card is just to identify your booking. Should work even if it's been replaced later. The ability of booking office staff to help also seems to be a YMMV issue. Just once, the machine failed to print one ticket from a group I was collecting for my daughter - the ticket was Virgin specific and, at the time of booking, only on their website. However the booking clerk at Northampton was able to sort it for me.
