Don't you mean allocations of expensive, rip-off, and extortionate?
Rail fares are the main reason why I still own a car. It's less expensive and much more convenient; even when travelling solo.
I agree entirely with this - the cheapest way for me to get to Scotland with a bike is to buy a car for £500, drive up and back and then sell it when I get home. I always seem to miss the tickets that cost 50p and a bag of grapes. And going by car I can take whatever route I want to call in on friends, leave when I like and listen to whatever music I like, and as a bonus I don't have to sit next to drunken squaddies or people wishing to tell me their problems via the medium of half a phone conversation.

He will have time on his hands to do that seeing how long court sessions last. Rumour has it that they don't look out of their office windows in the morning to leave themselves something to do in the afternoon. It looks like your friend uses his free time productively. :okay:
There do seem to be a large number of black tie luncheons in his schedule, not all of which he finds enjoyable.

I am travelling to London next month. The £13 that I spent on rail tickets to get me there and back to Leeds would get me to Peterborough by car. It's one of the reasons that I use the railway for longer journeys - it's cheaper than driving.
It also means you can have pies and beer .

We used to be able to book our own tickets with work and I used to play the system and travel first class for less than the cost of a standard class ticket . Then they changed it so we had to use a travel booking company, now it costs the company more . Bonkers .

There is no 2nd class btw . Never was.

Reminds me of a Bar dinner at which the then new Prime Minister Tony Blair was guest of honour.

It was in his County Durham constituency and the QC hosting it greeted Blair with the words: "Good evening, Prime Minister, tonight you will be able to meet all the people who didn't vote for you."

You must have slept well ..... You ended up back whence you came.
To be fair it's hard to tell difference at the stations at either end as there are so many pished scots , and that's just the train company employees.

No, you just have to pay attention the whole bloody way, stay sober and rested, keep the stereo and GPS on traffic Alerts mode and hope no nobber too close in front crashes that you can't reroute. Service stations are a special sort of hell but naff all else is open if you're travelling off peak.

Train every time it's feasible. I can work, read, listen to music or watch videos, have beers and meals... and it's not so much more expensive that it negates the cost of my time, usually.

Not often I will agree with you , but that is spot on why I only drive when I just can't take what I need with me, and I have put a scuba set with a single 12 on my back and ridden into town before! Can't get the neo dry suit into panniers though so stuffed on that one.

I'd rather be responsible for paying attention myself than relying on someone else to do it - and at the times I'd travel, there isn't much traffic. I've done Manchester to Glasgow in 3 hours in the past, which with checking in and baggage reclaim and all that is quicker than flying. And I got to take a whole bottle of shampoo, plus a rather nice bottle of wine, chilled in the 12v fridge thing for when I arrived.

Service stations can be grim, but I only use them for the toilets. I take food with me.

Besides which I most often travel with the family now - 3 train tickets and 6 bus tickets plus a lot of carrying luggage and waiting about, or air-conditioned, cheaper transport that leaves from the front door whenever we need it, and is usually faster.

Another added bonus of the car is that you don't have to worry that someone has taken your luggage (accidentally or otherwise) every time you stop.

EDIT - just to add, I quite enjoy travel for it's own sake, so I don't consider travelling time 'wasted' so I don't feel the need to work at the same time. If I want to do something 'productive' I can listen to any number of 'improving' podcasts. Or not.

Realistically, if it's hosing down come the day, I will duff the trip.
Book with Southern

http://www.southernrailway.com/offers/money-back-guarantee

As long as you get the right ticket type, and don't collect it, you can get your money back.

Used this to book 2 trains back from a France ferry. As the stupid thing stayed docked but didn't open the doors for 20 minutes I was glad to have the alternative ticket on a separate booking. Online refund really simple.

We looked for train tickets recently, nearly £250 for a short journey. It's crazy how much they have changed in the last 10 years.
