No, you just have to pay attention the whole bloody way, stay sober and rested, keep the stereo and GPS on traffic Alerts mode and hope no nobber too close in front crashes that you can't reroute. Service stations are a special sort of hell but naff all else is open if you're travelling off peak.
Train every time it's feasible. I can work, read, listen to music or watch videos, have beers and meals... and it's not so much more expensive that it negates the cost of my time, usually.
I'd rather be responsible for paying attention myself than relying on someone else to do it - and at the times I'd travel, there isn't much traffic. I've done Manchester to Glasgow in 3 hours in the past, which with checking in and baggage reclaim and all that is quicker than flying. And I got to take a whole bottle of shampoo, plus a rather nice bottle of wine, chilled in the 12v fridge thing for when I arrived.
Service stations can be grim, but I only use them for the toilets. I take food with me.
Besides which I most often travel with the family now - 3 train tickets and 6 bus tickets plus a lot of carrying luggage and waiting about, or air-conditioned, cheaper transport that leaves from the front door whenever we need it, and is usually faster.
Another added bonus of the car is that you don't have to worry that someone has taken your luggage (accidentally or otherwise) every time you stop.
EDIT - just to add, I quite enjoy travel for it's own sake, so I don't consider travelling time 'wasted' so I don't feel the need to work at the same time. If I want to do something 'productive' I can listen to any number of 'improving' podcasts. Or not.
