I am a long time mountain biker who made the transition to road biking this year with the intention of completing the Lotoja in September. I have been averaging 75-100 miles/week with significant climbing in an attempt to get ready. I know this isn't really enough, but it is all my job allows me. I have done 5 rides over 100 miles this season. Yesterday I rode in an organized century event and had big problems with cramping starting at about mile 70. I felt like I stayed hydrated (3 L water and 3 L Powerade) and ate several Hammer gel packs. I am hoping my problem was related to the 95 degree heat, but it is possible that we could have those temps for Lotoja. I am an RN and I have a good understanding of exercise physiology and electrolyte balance. Anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent cramping or get rid of them once they occur?
