Not sure about the 500 but on the 800 you can drag and drop the gpx files into a folder called new files on the device and that converts it to tcx or whatever it is next time its turned on.

Alternatively can use base camp or a site like ridewithgps or bikehike and send the files that way

Hi Sellyb,
I used to have a lot of trouble very similar to what you are experiencing. I now create my courses on GarminConnect, don't know if you have an account? Anyway if you don't they are free to set up and a good place to keep track of your activities.
In the 'courses' section you plot a course as you would using other sites then there is a simple 'send to device' button and thats it, job done. Because GarminConnect knows which device you have got plugged in to your comp it does all of the bits and bobs for you. Unplug device, turn on, fix to bike, away you go!!!

It just defaults to .tcx files and if your files arent .tcx it simply wont see them. Just change the 'File of type' box to .gpx if that is what you have got and it'll see them then.

Correct

The plot thickens! I have installed Garmin Training Center, yet when I go to import the files which are on my desktop, the desktop doesn't have all the items showing when I choose where to import data from. e.g. all it shows is Libraries, Computer, Network and System folder, but all the other items physically on my desktop are missing. Help! Thank you.

Click FILE > IMPORT TO CURRENT USER > ALL then from the drop down list "Files of Type" select GPX and then browse to the folder where you saved the GPX file

When in training centre you load the GPX file and save as a course:thumbsup:

I think Bikeroutetoaster may be the way to go, thanks Guys, nothing else seems to be working. I have managed to transfer the gpx. file from my Desktop to Bikeroutetoaster, and then hopefully, fingers crossed, I can then download to my device, I will find out this evening. Who would have thought it would be such a fiddly thing! I am using Garmin Connect too, but there don't seem to be as many local routes on there. Thank you all, your help has been invaluable.
