I've been with Amex for about the last 20 years. Never had cause to test them myself, but s friend did rather thoroughly: helicopter rescue, intensive care, air ambulance home – all covered without any fuss.

You feckin' well do. If the worst happens, it's seriously costly. An air ambulance trip is not cheap - like annual salary and then some.
With annual policies at £12 or so, it's stupid not to. JFGI...

Three word soundbite
Last trip to Europe I got some insurance through allcleartravel.co.uk because they asked questions about, and therefore covered, my Type 1 Diabetes and anaphylaxis. I looked at a few others, but they never asked about those conditions, which put me off them. If you have health issues (hope you don't) have a look at them. Otherwise, there are no doubt cheaper options around and if nothing else, make sure you have one of the EHIC cards.
Why would you need an air ambulance? And if you did, you would be covered just the same as in the UK.
Why? I dunno. But if you needed to be bought back home, it's costly. And EHIC won't cover it.

As I understand it, and I might well be wrong, but the EHIC card only provides for treatment. So if you have to go to Hospital you get your treatment covered by the Card, but once you are discharged, then it down to you thus if you need to be brought home to the UK, then you pay.
