Didn't the Rolling Stones used to be a Blues tribute band?

I think the Beatles covered a few rock and roll songs in their time

Covers are fine. The trick is to put your own slant on them, hence my band's disco folk version of "Stayin' Alive", the flute solo in our version of "Whole Lotta Rosie" and my solo bluegrass version of the Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now".

Some names I thought of:

an Irish techno outfit - The Mega Micks

A Genesis tribute band - Geniuses

A Scottish band - (och aye) The Noo

Let's not forget Dread Zeppelin.

Fronted by an Elvis lookylike/soundalike covering Led Zepp tunes in a Reggae stylee

They were great, I'd forgotten about them.
Similar is "The King", a postman apparently who covers mainly alt-rock songs in his pitch-perfect Elvis voice.
There was a local Wellington NZ Smiths tribute band called The Salford Lads Club, they were really good, although they needed two guitarists to recreate Johnny Marr.
