I suppose that my reticence is no more grounded in fact than the reticence of those folk who say 'but isn't cycling dangerous'.

Trikes are damn scary on club runs, though. Two wheel recumbents are predictable, but trikes will change course just like that - if you're overtaking one of the buggers it pays to keep well away.

Indeed: it's another case where perceptions and reality are some considerable distance apart.

Trikes are damn scary on club runs, though.
Really? I've done quite a few group rides, and never had any issues. Trike riders are generally much more aware of what's around them and behind them that two-wheeled cyclists thanks to a stable platform from which to look around and excellent mirrors. Even when I'm leaving a group, it's often me to be the first to alert riders to a car approaching from behind.
