Trip to the tip

Local council tip recycling facility has a sign above every skip saying what goes into it together with a drawing.
Green waste - drawing of a bush
cardboard - a box
white goods - a washing machine
scrap metal - a bike . Had a peek in, skip was almost empty bar a few bits and pieces and a BSO

Also saw a strange BSO while I was on the way there. Y-frame mtb but no rear suspension, just a couple of stays from the centre of the 'Y' to the rear hub.

My son had a Giant bike like that, made to look like a suspension bike but wasn't. Heap of cast iron pig-heavy lump of sh**.

A European company, that is in the same office block as me, has insisted that their office has four seperate rubbish bins for the different types of waste and they must be used. This is fine but each day the office cleaners come in to empty the bins and then throws all of the rubbish into ONE big skip outside of the building!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to our local facility yesterday and there were at least 3 bikes in the scrap metal bin - all very low quality.

Best place for them. If the £50 specials were delivered straight there it would save those who buy them the trouble assembling them and finding out how bad they are before delivering them to the tip themselves.

In South Africa recently, I spent half an hour loitering in the centre of a wholly black town in the sticks. It was shift-change time at the sawmill there. Maybe 200 guys went through the junction in the centre of the town during that time on bikes.

90% of them were riding those Y-frame bike-shaped objects. No rear suspension.

5% had older mountain bikes, but almost invariably with the derailleurs removed and running as singlespeeds. (Flat area).

The other 5% had 80s style racer lookalikes, also usually run as single speeds. A couple of them were obviously much loved and in pristine condition.

I had a good look at a few of them, because I was looking after our spaceframe Moultons while Mrs Uncle Phil went shopping. They attracted some interest from the passing cyclists.

I dream of finding a nice bike I can rescue from a skip. So far, the best I could find was a Dawes Kingpin which I returned to the skip when I realised the frame was cracked. Got me a spare wheel with working SA hub for my Raleigh so wasn't a total waste of time.

You aren't allowed to take bikes from York's tips anymore. Even if you bribe/pay the minders.

But I understand that they all go to York Bike Rescue anyway, and you can get bits from there. The ones that aren't stripped are rescued.

Yes, I don't begrudge Bike Rescue (esp since I got my free powdercoating from them!). Tom used to like getting bikes from the tip though. At one stage our rented house 'lawn' was completely covered with potential doing-up projects. He found a Moulton Speed Six once - now in the custody of Cyclemagic.

BTW, if you're ever at Bike Rescue, ask Andy if you can see Tom's Jabberwocky Tall bike....
