Finally got round to trying to make the FD work and success!!! With a proviso 
To get the FD to clear the middle chainring I had to raise it on it's mounting and now I am over the recommended gap between the outer chainring and the outer plate of the FD, it is now well over 3mm, I had set it up as the diagram above and every other recommendation that I've seen of 1 to 2mm. I've test ridden it and it changes well and so far the chain hasn't been thrown off the outer ring so fingers crossed that is the whole thing finished. I'll go on a longer ride this week to see if it remains OK. Thanks again for all the help, it made a big difference and allowed me to approach things logically and not emotionally!
