I wear Endura Singletrack - the first pair lasted a few years then wore out at the crotch. They carried on a while longer after I repaired them but eventually I replaced them like-for-like as I like them so much.

These or similar are great even if less popular now than they used to be. Choose the socks to go with the weather. Especially in the wet, they have the great advantage of not having a heavy or soggy lower leg to impose uncomfortable strains on the waist.
Narrow leg jeans? They won't be as flexible but I doubt it would matter that much on a bike. Might be worth a shot if it's getting tangled in the chain that your trying to avoid.
