That's a really good comparison - I'll bookmark that for any foreign visitors we get at work.

From the table I'd say Oyster was better. It is certainly quicker, particularly if it is tube or bus only. With the kids though, if they are under 11, I guess you'll have to get the station staff to let them through the wide barrier for luggage/pushchairs.

Just make sure to always touch out, sometimes late at night the barriers get left open at quiet stations. Otherwise you get charged the maximum fare.

Hopefully the weather will pick up for you as the view from the London Eye is great on a nice day - as you are at Docklands, I'd recommend the Thames Clipper ride down there, though the scramble to get a decent photo of Tower Bridge from the rear of the boat can be a little unsightly .....

Oyster is better unless you get a weekly or monthly season. The daily expense on Oyster is capped at the cost of a day Travelcard, and, just supposing that you decide, for whatever reason to venture in to zone 3 or 4 the Oyster allows you to do that without joining another queue.

However......there is a three quid deposit for Oyster cards, and I don't know how you go about getting it back

We went as a family in November - just got a weekly oyster for the two adults.

You'll need to perfect the walking through barriers with a kid, or use the disabled/pram barriers.

The station attendant told us to have kid infront of us, place your arms down over their chest and walk through together - certainly worked.

I tried that with the woman in front of me... erm... she wasn't that keen....

Oyster is the best way to go. and you can get a refund on the deposit ( if you actually ever get charged it, I never have ) at any tube station.

the best thing is being able to keep them for the next trip into London as lots of my friends and family have commented on when they come to stay with us.

if you apply earl;y enough you could get the 11-18 oyster for the eldest ,or if they look young enough just blag it they are 11.
