I have recently purchased a Tacx t1820 magnetic turbo trainer I have set it up tonight and thought I would give it a wee trial run tonight. After about 1 minute there was a strong burning rubber smell and my tyre looked pretty worn. My question is how much should my tyre actually touch the mag unit? Should it be very tight or only just touching as I have read mixed messages. Sorry if it seems a little solid but this is my first trainer, any help is appreciated.

It should tell you in the bumf, iirc for the fortius they say 3.5 turns on the screw from first contact. HOWEVER I would suggest you also use a trainer specific tyre as normal road tyres will delaminate and blister in no time.

not sure about Tacx but you deffo need a training tire - i use a 15 quid schwalbe on the turbo, it's a sturdy old compound and has survived the turbo nicely so far...last year my maxxis were in need of replacement anyway so i left it on for a bit of turbo training - it got through 2 sessions before it was next to knackered. i use a cycleops turbo and the tire is set to only 'touch' the roller. there's not much pressure on it at all...maybe the same for the Tacx but as has been said, read the bumpf. good luck with it
