I have just bought one for the specific reason that by the time i get home from work it is pitch black and i mainly ride on country lanes so do not feel completely safe doing so and also as the weather and cold set in i can jump on the turbo and watch a video whilst spinning away.

i went for this one as it seem easy to set up and i can just use my gears to change the resistance http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/

Interesting, I figured maybe the trainer tyres were made of a different style of rubber or tread design to lengthen their life on a trainer.
According to the sales blurb they are made differently as tyres on a turbo get very hot which is not very good for normal tyres.

I used mine for one winter before getting bored of it, but I didn't have anywhere to set it up permanently for the season.
if you have a second bike and a garage where you could set it all up without having to take it down, change tyres, change wheel , move it around etc etc everytime it could be a useful addition
otherwise buy some winter clothing instead

I have one set-up perminantly in the attic room. My TT bike adourns it through the winter and its connected to a pc and screen. Can dowmload all my gps routes to it and the turbo/computer will simulate the terrain recorded within the gps file. This winter i'll be training using gps data collected from the toughest of our TT courses from last year.

I am looking forward to a winter of training pain

But no resistance, either. Unless you could mount a squirrel-cage fan to a roller or the rear wheel of the bike.

Well last winter it was plenty hard enough pedalling in the 52x11 gear, will see how I go this winter with a compact, I do have the option of dropping tyre pressure a little.

I've a turbo trainer which I use occasionally - I set up the summer bike on it in a spare room. My main problem is that I overheat too quickly as there's no wind to cool me down. I've though about having a fan blowing over me to help.
It's pretty noisy too so that can be an issue using it especially in a flat or attached house etc.

It's also so BORING...... I don't have the fancy computer/video linked one.....

Doesn't have to be linked, I just play a sufferfest video on my laptop, they make it much much better. You work harder and enjoy it.... a little.

Turbo trainers....worth buying??

I bought one last year, an Elite which has 5 resistance settings which, when used in conjunction with the bike's gears, gives quite a range. I liked to use it in the shed listening to the radio.

I used it so much that I upgraded to a Tacx but the PC required to drive the software, the virtual reality stuff cost more than a good bike.

Contact me if you want to buy a near new Elite, I'm not far from Barnsley.

You can? Cool! I didn't know that - most of the people that have talked about an indoor trainer never referred to a specific tyre (sorry, from US, used to using tire) for indoor. Seemed that most (including reviewers) just used their bike as is off the street without specialized tyres. It's good to know that for future reference

They are very much quieter because they have no tread and also the rubber compound is such that it can handle the generated heat better, eg. http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/...e/aid:639948?gclid=CNWS98vVmsECFRMatAodHngAiQ

I am looking at the Tacx Satori Smart for the link to Garmin and my iPhone or iPad simultaneously. Can't find stick anywhere yet though. It's a new model, so may have to hang fire for a fortnight or so. :-(

Hi, no, not in a hurry. I'll be away and for a few days anyway and won't return until Sat night.

Hope your leg gets better. I noticed that as I got older, every knock took just that little bit longer to get better and I decided that it was time to give up when I was starting a match with aches from the previous two matches.
