I bought my first one in 1999, a Nokia with a big protruding antenna, my second one about 2004, a Nokia 6320i (excellent) and my third and last maybe 3 years ago, a Nokia E71. I use hardly any of it's features but I need to be able to receive emails when I am out and about, the battery lasts all week. My wife and sons have smartphones, Samsung, HTC, Huawei and their batteries seem to last a day or two, max.

If you want office suits and email for work and a long lasting battery, buy an E71.

Funnily enough, I looked at the E71 before I went to Android. I thought it was the best phone available from Nokia at the time. Unfortunately, I also decided that Symbian and Nokia were heading down the pan, so didn't go for it.

I've had a Galaxy Ace Plus smartphone (Android) for several months now and it's great, but there are occasions when I want something smaller, cheaper and simpler with me, so I still have my Alcatel clamshell for that.

It cost £3 from Argos (last year's model clearout sale) about 6 years ago, easy to use, totally reliable and the battery usually lasts a week.

Provided the information is on the SIM card not the phone I get all the stored numbers on it when I move the SIM card, and SMS messages as well. Definitely worth having both available.

I know it's aimed at the old and decrepit like 3BM and Crackle but I like it

We bought the even simpler Doro 410 for my Mother and Mother-in-law and they are delighted with them.

Same chassis, but no camera
