Another mention for Northern Exposure & Due South (though watched a few repeats of the latter a while ago, then didn't bother with it).

Anyone mentioned the 4400 yet? Or Wonderfalls? Or Life?

I really liked Life, didn't think too much of the background story to it, the conspiracies seemed a bit muddled, but I loved the zen theme, quirky characters and the relationship between Crews and Reese. One of the very few TV shows that I've bought on DVD (though will still probably never watch!).

Budgie. Adam Faith was often asked why he refused to go on past three series when there was great public demand for it and he replied that it's always better to leave the public wanting more and not having them say 'will this never stop'. Absolutely Fabulous of course falling into the last category there.

The Sopranos. The best TV series ever made by quite a long chalk and sad to know there's no more episodes, not even a Christmas Special! Also sad to know that it's not certain as to whether it's supposed to end with the death of Tony, or the death of you as a witness to all the ongoings.

The Black and White Minstrel Show. Should be looking forward to a Saturday night in watching that!

An obscure US SF show called 'Surface'.

Basically, it was about a female scientist and a diver who joined forces to investigate mysterious huge sea beasts that had appeared in the oceans. The diver had lost his brother to one...or had he?. It was later suggested that his brother might still be alive. The plot had quite a few turns and could best be thought of as the X-Files meets a Roland Emmerich-style disaster movie with some kind of massive conspiracy to unearth.

Naturally, there were baddies trying to keep the existance of the creatures secret (a US sub had it's hull bitten into and the creatures had the ability to regenerate so fast, they could walk on magma). A young kid found one of the young creatures, befriended it and was bitten by some, only later to be developing strange powers. Our heroes managed to uncover some truth that a mysterious 'Mr X' was behind a plot to re-engineer the world with these creatures, one of the bad guys was a clone of said Mr X.

The final episode of season one had our heroes escape from Mr X's underground James Bond - style lair and join the young boy with his 'pet' creature on top of a church roof just as a tsunami washed through the town. The show's season was apparently shortened to make way for the 2010 winter olympics and, you guessed it, cancelled  .

Surface was great pulp B-movie SF, but revealed plot twists in large chunks unlike the X-Files that just went on a bit too long.

I liked Drop the Dead Donkey too, especially the running gag about Damiens cameraman who always ended up injured or hospitalised  .

However, since it was topical and recorded often up to the day of broadcast (the voiceovers on the end credits were very last-minute), it would be very dated now. A bit like it's predecessor, Not The 9 O'Clock News.

Inertia

I feel like I could... TAKE ON THE WORLD!!
One I remember from when I was younger was The Tripods - which ended before it should have because of the tragic death of one of the main actors.
I liked that too, I hadn't heard about that though, very sad and ironic considering who she played in the show. They did do the second series though which was after her death.

For me Id pick

Deep Space Nine
Babylon 5 (very ambitious and forward thinking show, had an 'arc' before they were common.)
Firefly
Caprica
Stargate Universe/Atlantis
