Tyre duration

How far would you say a tyre should last (road bike) , I'm not talking about splits or cuts I mean to the point where the tyre is worn down to the cord?

once you start getting more punctures than normal is a good sign and some times they can go out of shape so it will ride like its got a lump , if that makes sense

I usually use the rule of thumb when p'tures become more frequent than normal.
