Tyre Height ??

Hello all,

I recently brought some BMX tyres for my folder in order to make the ride quality better and make it less of a death trap when on gravel ( it has narrow slicks on at present) they were supposed to be 20 x 2.00 but in reality were 2.25 but as they were really tall they fowled the brake cable and were only just able to fit between the frame. I had measured the possible max width at the same height as the original slicks. So my question is do up market tyres also give a height size ? The BMX tyres made a world of difference to the ride quality but I had to release the front brake to use them .

The 2.00 is the width, not the height. If they're wider and on the same rim they may be pushed upwards, hence the additional height.

Different tyres have different heights; i.e. a Continental GP 4 Seasons appears to be taller than a GP5000 for the same width, probably due to additional puncture protection.

Width and height need taking into account. Having 'space' width wise, does not mean you will on height. Wider tyres are taller.

Rim width also affects tyres as the tyre get's wider. A narrow rim will result in a narrower but taller tyre than a wider rim, which results in a wider but less tall tyre when using the exact same tyre.

…..and then of course: different Brands of supposedly the same size tyre - do NOT come out the same size on exactly the same rim.

BMX tyres being the ‘worst’ imo. Can unfortunately be a case of trial and error 🙄

Got some 28's Michelin, that are more like 25c in Continental Michelin always come up 'narrow'. Vittoria seem accurate. The Michelin label on the tyre actually says 26-28c depending on rim.
