new conti grand prix 4000s, had run just a few miles. suddenly a strange explosion noise from the front, and then the massive whistling noise of air escaping, within seconds the front tyre was flat!! fortunately i was still only yards from home and still to gather speed!!

tyre was very carefully mounted in the weekend and inflated to recommended pressure..

any thoughts on how this could have happened?

I had a similar thing happen while travelling downhill at speed,46.2mph. Whole side blew out, not sure if it was the inner tube which went first and caused the tire to blow, or the tire let go. May have hit something sharp in the road, or the rim heated it up too much. I don't think it was that because I was trying to get up to 50mph so was not using my breaks much. Anyway, was filming at the time with the Go-pro and for the one and only clip, it never recorded sound!! the whole loud BANG!!! and everything else which went with it. Lucky to have stayed on as could easily have come off, lucky it didn't happen on a corner where I would have had to turn.

An inner tube cannot explode within a tyre*, so for jaynana the cause was a tube pinched between the tyre bead and rim, the bit of tube outside the tyre bead will have blown up into a thin walled bubble then popped due to having no tyre round it to stop it expanding. For Simon M definitely the tyre split allowing the tube to expand in the same way.

*I had to admit this to myself years ago after a spate of this, then I started checking round looking between the tyre and rim before I inflated and the problem stopped permanently.
