The tubes were Nutrak 700 x 25-32c. They were only 5 weeks' old though. Maybe these tubes aren't very good quality? My wheels are quite cheap but the rim tape is good and thick - a comfy place for a piece of high pressure rubber! ;-)

The gashes in both tubes were about 4-5inches long and a little towards the face of the tube from the seam.

I'm very wary to use these tyres again in the summer time. I've popped on a pair of 23 Conti Gaitorskins for the moment. They're so much faster than the Schwalbes!! I hope I don't suffer from the dreaded 'p' word that should not be mentioned.

Great story Sleekitcollie - very similar bang and gash! I'm only glad I could get to Evans' Cycles before they shut so I could get home. Cost me over £50 though 2 new Spec tubes and the Gaitors.

Are you sure the tyres and tubes were installed properly?
Not a small portion of tube bulging outside the tyre on both tyres perhaps.........and in the sun....... extra heat........increase in pressure, was just too much?

I suppose it's possible Betty, however, I've fitted many tyres in my life and you only make that mistake once!
I never use tyre levers and always put a few pumps into the tubes before fitting. I always 'massage' the tyre before inflating so not to pinch the tube.

I'm pretty sure. The rims are 700's and 28mm external width and approx 25mm internal width. Tyres 28mm Marathon Plus.

The tyres really did go on too easily! Could I just be very unlucky and have a rim/tyre mismatch?

Those tyres sound way too narrow for a 25mm rim, what tyres did you originally have on them?
Quick look at Sheldon's chart shows 44mm tyres being more suitable for a 25mm rim

Like Gaz, I did wonder about the ease of them going on, some people can fit them relatively easily but not to the ease in which you mention.

You might want to check the interior width. A 25mm interior width shouldn't have much less than a 44mm tyre.

Your interior width should be between 15 and 19mm

Does your works bike rack have a rounded perspex roof? I wonder if you're getting a magnifying glass effect beating down on your bike which is heating it up?

Touch wood, I've never had any probs with M+s after 6,000 miles.....I swear by them.

The bike rack is open to the elements - including the sun!

I think the nail has been hit on the head though - the tyres are not suitable for these wheels.
