How oftyen should you be checking your tyre pressure?

Also i have a hand pump but my tyre pressure should be at 120psi, is this even possible with a hand pump or would i be better of with a larger one???

Cheers

I check mine before every ride, a quick sit on the bike and i can see what the tyres are like.

I have a hand pump with essentialy two pumps, one for low pressure, one for high and it also has a pressure gauge, so with enough work i can get it up to 120psi, but pumping from near flat your going to want a track pump.

I squeeze my tyres every time I get the bike out. If they seem soft, I pump 'em. They've usually lost around 20 PSI by the time I notice any softness.

Most people struggle to get over 100 PSI with a hand pump. A track pump will make it easier.

120psi will be the stated maximum. Unless they're thin racing tyres it'll be safe and more comfortable to run them at lower pressures - 80 to 100psi depending on your weight and the tyre size.
Examples: I'm around 75kg and run 25mm touring tyres at 90 - 100psi. I run 20mm training tyres at around 115, and racing tubulars at 140+.

Once a week unless they feel soft. The best maintenance purchase I ever made was a track pump. 100psi? Easy! Hand pump I would give up around 80!

Get a track pump. I got one from ebay for 20 quid and it will pump from flat to 80 psi in less that 30 strokes.

Are the cheap £8 ones from Wilkinsons any good?

The tyres are 700 x 28 they are what i would consider quite thin. On a boardman hybrid comp. Is 120psi to high??

Thanks for all the help

What does it say on the wall of the tyre?. There is usually a max pressure rating. You may also want to check the rating on the rim. One of my bikes has a rim max pressure of 100, but the tyre can take 120.

A decent track pump (I have a Topeak one) is what you need! I had a Tescos one for a while, but the Topeak one is much better. For a start, the cheap ones tend to be wildly inaccurate at higher pressures.

But that is easy to check against a standard pen gauge, Tesco one seemed accurate, I've not had this problem before, maybe it's hit and miss?
