But that is easy to check against a standard pen gauge, Tesco one seemed accurate, I've not had this problem before, maybe it's hit and miss?

I expect it is hit-and-miss. I bought the Topeak because I use my bike so often that I couldn't be bothered with the pen gauge! The pump cost £40, but is incredibly quick and easy to use.

Oh right, I just check all my pump gauges against something else when I buy them, not every single time. Did yours give erratic readings?...oo-er.

Cheaper track pumps tend to be most suitable for the lower pressures of mtb tyres, having wider barrels. For high pressure tyres a narrow barrel makes life much easier.

I'd recommend a decent track pump - will last years. I have a Silca metal track pump that's over 20 years old and is great...

Even a really good one will only be about £25. Best cycling investment you'll ever make. Honest.

Yep, I bought a cheap one from Lidl. It was useless and I threw it out after a few months. I replaced it with a Specialized one from the LBS for £25. As others have said, they are an essential accessory.

I have the Spesh Pro one, with the air release button on top. Great pump!!

Pretty much all of them fit both Presta and Schraeder. However on some you have to switch bits of the pump's valve head which is a pita. So you want to look out for a 'dual head' if you can, I can recommend the Blackburn Air Tower 2, which is about £25 although I got mine for £20.
