Surprise, surprise; I've just replaced another conti 4000s that had failed prematurely on the side wall. Bought another conti 4000s, as it was a reasonable price probable now the GP4000sII is out but I think if it happens again I'll be tryring something else.

Ultremo ZX get a vote from me. Great tire. Cheap online too. No matter what you ride, you will like them. Even if you prefer something more.

I'm getting mixes messages on these tyres, I read that they are dry thin and don't last long, more a racing tyre. Is that right?

Yes that^
Very thin contact strip. Pretty fragile-ive had 3 punctures and got a bulge. But they feel so good. Will save for racing now and use something more robust for the miles

I ran michelein lithion 2s over the winter, and now run them on my training wheels. Fast, punctured twice all winter (not at since February), dirt cheap - that's riding 12-20 hours a week. If push came to shove I'd happily race on them - I also plan to use them for a 1000km audax coming up.

I think the only reason that more people do not buy them is that they are so cheap - which leads to people assuming they are crap.

Not a huge fan of gatorskins - they last forever, but are slow and get really slippy in the wet. Cheaper Continental tyres don't seem to last at all. GP 4000s are all the rave but I have yet to try them - they're the most common racing clincher by a country mile. Scwable blizzards and vittoria zaffino's are slow and heavy, but dirt cheap and don't puncture all that much - last a while as well. I race on mich pro 4's - I wouldn't recommend them for day to day use due to durability.

Bump...

Just searching the 'what tyres' threads as it's time to replace my Ultremo ZX's. No problems with the ZX's, they've been surprisingly puncture resistant and have lasted about 2000 miles, but thought I'd try something different and have found the Lithion 2's (as recommended above) with free tubes for £25 / pair:
