All sport reflects the values of its supporters so yes, they're all compromised. Point being that the most popular sport will reflect those values more closely. Not looking good is it? ;0)

Do professional cyclists taking drugs reflect your values closely?

Poo! It looked clear penalty from the ref's position, he had to look "through" Boruc, it looked a clear penalty, every ref would have given it...... unless he had eyes like a hammerhead shark or summat.

I claim no special powers, but my first reaction was that he dived. Replays confirmed it.

For God's sake, no one is saying that at first sight it didn't look like a penalty. It wasn't and he was simply conning the Ref. He should have been punished.

Yes, with a yellow card.

I wouldn't argue with that at all, User482. However, he allowed the deception to continue to a penalty, that he took and scored!!!
Had the Ref. seen the dive and given a yellow we would all have been happy.

I didn't see it but the paper reports that the boot was on the other foot (geddit) last night for Arsenal v Liege, when a Liege player went down under the slightest touch to win a penalty. Is there a baying for blood on this one? I think the problem is that UEFA have made a rod for their own back by turning a blind eye to diving and shirt pulling for so long that they're having trouble eliminating it.
In some ways it mirrors the UCI's notoriously ambivalent attitude to doping in the peleton.

Indeed, by my argument has two points:

1. He shouldn't receive a harsher punishment (i.e a ban) than if the ref had seen it.

2. He shouldn't be singled out, as attempting to con the ref is a feature of every single match.

Thankfully, UEFA have belatedly realised this.

1. Yes he should. Just like Adebayor faces a harsher punishment than what he was given on the pitch

2. He shouldn't literally be singled out....ie nobody else will ever face such a ban, but he should be banned.

1. A lengthy ban is the prescribed punishment for stamping on someone. A yellow card is the prescribed punishment for diving.

2. See point 1.

1. Your argument doesn't make sense, Adebayor received a yellow card for what he did on the pitch....not even a red. Why is he being banned after the event, if as you say He shouldn't receive a harsher punishment (i.e a ban) than if the ref had seen it.
A ban is a precribed punishment for several things, including deceiving the ref....thats in the laws of the game.

2. !?!?

1. The punishment for stamping is a ban. If the ref gets it wrong, then it is proportionate and consistent to ban the player after the event.

2. The punishment for diving is a yellow card. If the ref gets it wrong, then it is disproportionate and inconsistent to ban the player after the event.
