When you actually live in one place abroad for several years a place can look very different than what it looks like on a short break

100% agree, living somewhere permanantly is massively different from holidaying or staying in a new country for a few months. You still have to learn the language, find a job, pay the bills, do the shopping, fix the house when it gets hit by tropical storms (ok that last one doesn't happen too much in Blighty ^_^ )

I have lived in spain for 2 years...when i was younger, and i was ok...happy..but then i had a family ...so it's different now. So I was just thinking about living abroad again...i mean living alone here isnt any fun, so living abroad might be better...hmm..except for the language barrier i guess.

When the kids were young we lived in Southern Sweden for 18 months, coming back to the UK was one of the sadest days of my life.

GB is brilliant but maybe depends on where in the country you live?

There are all manner of dreadful places to live on this planet and here is not one of them.

The Media makes things seem worse, they don't report on positives.

There are many places similar to where we live. We live in a small rural village and have zero crime - we have 2 cars and a van on the drive right now. None are locked, two have mobiles left in them and my unlocked van has my wallet on the dash. We often leave our house unlocked when we go out.

People check to see if other people are ok. Everyone stops and has a natter. No one gives a flying fig as to what anyone else has or hasn't got. We have a good mix of young/old and wealthy/not so wealthy in the village (200ish people) and everyone rubs along nicely.

Courier drivers etc leave parcels 'on the step' and kids toys and garden furniture is left outside all the time.

There are plenty of places like this but they don't get reported - just as well I suppose as my wallet would disappear.
Can you please update your location on your profile? ;)

Beat me to it!

I like the UK, great place to live although I'd happily trade a few winter months for sunnier climes, Texas would do me nicely.

I don't get this UK is a shite place and I can't wait to get out, what's stopping you from going now?

I wouldn't emigrate, I'd miss all my friend.

It's not quite that simple these days though, is it? Gone are the days when you paid a tenner and hopped on the next ship bound for Australia. Other countries are not as willing to welcome foreigners with open arms, unless you have a particular skill that they want. At my age, and with my work background, it is unlikely that I would score much on their point system (talking NZ/Oz/Canada here). As for Europe; apart from the weather, most countries have similar problems to us.

As you know, people here have all sorts of ties which make emigrating a big problem. That doesn't mean that they are hanging around here because they like the place. It's not great (and not likely to get better any time soon), but there are worse. There are also a lot better but my chances of being able to afford a house in the Seychelles are slim ^_^.
