Some good comments from Stephen and Delport. I wild camped last September in Catalonia, quiet coves/spots are pretty easy to come by there, that is not the case further south. Inland you'll be lucky to find anywhere comfortable, yes it's doable but it might turn into an endurance test.

Rooms, I had rooms for 15/20 euros, decent too, a lot cheaper than France. Food, I tend to live from Supermarkets, I eat well, fruit, water and I am partial to those little ring pull fish salads (with integral fork ) and I think your £50 for food will be fine.

Ok, first up, sorry for any feeling that I was being harsh. You described yourself as unemployed and on benefits, and nowhere did you mention any health issues (whether physical or mental). Had you mentioned the incapaciity benefit, which I am well aware of, comment would of course not have been made. It is quite likely that the exercise etc of a trip like that will help your health.

I am not a heartless sod and last night took in two complete strangers from the world of cycle touring, put them up for the night, fed them etc, so probably unfair to class me as cold based upon one forum comment. And do look at warmshowers.com for a source of accommodation

The rest of my post stands - look at the positives you can offer to a travelling partner.

Do be realistic about money and have a friend/family member standing by for any massive emergency etc

Best of luck

Would they even be able to make the trip if not on incapacity or a similar benefit?
It was kind of clear to me what the situation was.

I am also on incapacity if you want another person to knock, i am doing a lot to get work as i don't want dole money for the next 20 years, i give my time free to help others.I work for a homeless charity and i teach and help the elderly, today i fixed a pensioners pc totally free of charge, i even paid my own transport costs.
The other thing to take on board is a cycle trip can help someone get well and get back to work, cycling can improve many situations, self confidence, fitness, self belief, take on challenges, get better organised. tackle phobias and fears, amongst just a few things to mention.

Simple logic says even if there were no unemployed people in the uk your contributions are hardly likely to go down in any way. When i worked i couldn't care less if an unemployed person got a single penny of that money.

You may find my attitude confrontational, i found yours confrontational, as you were having a go at someone the same as myself.

I can think of many people I know on incapacity benefit who would not be able to make such a trip due to the nature of their incapacity. And I just re-read the OP and it mentions unemployment and lack of fitness and an "extreme budget" - no mention or hint of being on incapacity benefit or health problems that might be significant limiting factors.

I am not sure if you read my post earlier today Delport as you say "The other thing to take on board is a cycle trip can help someone get well and get back to work" which is pretty much exactly what I said here "It is quite likely that the exercise etc of a trip like that will help your health."

Those who know me well from this forum know where my heart is. All the best for what is a beautiful ride.

Well if you look at the large time scale involved, 9 weeks was mentioned in the 1st post.
People on income support and job seekers have interviews to attend, they get check ups regular from the job centre to check that they are applying for work, they attend courses to prepare them for work.

And legally you are supposed to tell the dss of any breaks, you also have to sign on, i can't see a person doing that over in Spain.

Fair enough that you may have missed the ins and outs of claiming. But i had feeling the poster may have been on something like incapacity due to the time scale involved.

Incapacity can cover mental illness, depression, alcoholism, drug use,
anxiety and panic attacks [something which cycling can help with], fears [again cycling will help].
I had a certain phobia about heights, cycling helped as i crossed a massive bridge, the old severn, and felt good about myself after doing it, i was figuring out ways to avoid it but in the end went for it, rather than going via gloucester.
I've pushed myself forward, rather than idling around, spent last year in therapy, also decided last year i wanted to give something back to the community i live in, so i volunteered for as much as i could, i have skills which are going to waste if i didn't take these steps.

The goal is to work like a normal person, i actually envy some folk who have nothing, except a good personality, money doesn't interest me, self achievement and moving forward interests me.

I am just an average cyclist, who has done some long distance travelling, the discipline involved in doing long trips can be good for any person, to start and finish properly what you hope to achieve.

My idea soon is to go to Gibraltar by bike, the theory being i wanted to see what the employment situation is like, plus it is a challenging distance.
